The Secret Beach

On Sunday, the sun was shining so we set off to find a beach that has been kept very secret by the locals. It does not have a name, but we call it Black Rock Beach as it is made of small volcanic pebbles that are stunningly black. We have been to several fine black sand beaches here on the big island, but we appreciated how unique and beautiful we found the pebbles to be.
We set out over several miles of a huge lava flow.

Apparently there is a much faster way to get into the beach, but our mistake turned out to be well worth it!

The view was amazing! Some fisherman told us about a local fishing trail that wound its way along the black cliffs and down to the beach!

After a couple more miles of breathtaking views we finally dropped down into the beach!

Black sand beaches are created by a lava flow reaching the ocean. When the lava contacts the cold ocean water, it literally explodes into a million pieces that are as small as fine sand! This beach was made of lava that was probably not as hot and created small pebbles instead!

We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the sun, surf and views!
